Intro so a London based film company Tyburn Film Productions has taken Disney to court over something that's pretty fascinating if you've seen Rogue One you probably remember the impressive yet slightly uncanny digital recreation of Moff Tarkin originally played by Peter Cushing but as it turns out the recreation has sparked some legal trouble The CGI Recreation of Grand Moff Tarkin Tyburn Film Productions is suing Disney and Lucas Film claiming that the use of Cushing's likeness without their permission violates a contract that dates back to 1994 before Cushing passed away this contract supposedly gave Tyburn some control over the use of Cushing's image what's wild though is that even though Disney got the green light from Peter Cushing's estate to use his likeness in Rogue One Tyburn Film Productions' Lawsuit Tyburn argues that Disney didn't bother asking them this has sparked a whole legal dispute over who really has the rights to Cushing's image now it's important to note that this lawsuit comes years after Rogue One's release in 2016 so why is it happening now well Tyburn seems to be bringing the issue back to light as a use of CGI to resurrect actors is becoming more and more common in the film industry The Future of CGI in Film and despite what we might think contracts from decades ago can still hold serious weight today according to reports the case is still being investigated and a judge in the UK has ordered a full factual inquiry this means Disney and Lucasfilm will need to justify their use of Cushing's likeness and prove they didn't violate any agreements it's pretty crazy that something like this could resurface Closing nearly a decade later but this case could set a precedent for how studios handle CGI recreations of deceased actors going forward what do you think should studios like Disney have the right to use CGI to bring back legendary actors without clearing it with everyone involved or does Tyburn have a valid point here let me know in the comments and as always may the force be with you
