ridiculous fondling [Music] cardboard what is up welcome back to fondling cardboard I'm your host Mike lausta AKA The Golf Card Collector and today we're going to be unlocking a new character on on the show that is Adam vanze who is a golf Enthusiast an avid Golf Card Collector for the past year and we're just going to learn a bit about Adam uh how his collecting has evolved over his time in the hobby uh but more importantly we're going to be talking about Xander shafley and Scotty sheffler uh the race towards player of the year uh if Xander's Uprising was a surprise or a long time coming and whether or not he's able to Eclipse Scotty sheffer's historic year uh then we're going to wrap up with a conversation of course this is a trading card podcast we're going to talk about TOS Chrome Olympic cards because the aformentioned Xander shavy has some golf carts and of course it goes above and beyond the Sports Illustrated for Kids we're getting the iconic brand tops Chrome I'm I'm Blown Away with how tops has remained so consistent over the years with the gold parallel out of 50 the red out of five and it I love the gold with tops Chrome because it's attainable now some would say they prefer the Panini prism gold because it's serial numbered out of 10 and sure that is nice if you have it but for those not wanting to pay hundreds and thousands of dollars for a card that's not going to be a centerpiece of their collection making it serial numbered out of 50 year over-year consistently uh it it's a good amount of Rarity it's uh becomes a a Cornerstone of the hobby when it is consistent and the same goes for the red parallel and of course the superfractor we are going to touch on all of those different types of cards and more for Xander shafley and without further Ado here's the conversation what is up Adam how you doing man good good thanks for having me you bet you bet so let's just start off talking a little bit about you so what is your golf history and your hobby history golf history is is kind of back to the 1997 masters with Tiger Woods uh that kind of got my fandom started uh follow tiger throughout obviously his entire career uh and kind of at the tail end now uh terms of his playing I I I played college tennis uh once that was over I was kind of looking for my next competitive nature and golf was was the pretty easy uh uh way to move into and so been playing golf for 2025 years now a fairly decent player but uh try to try to play as much as I can as much as my wife allows me and and so uh as far as into the hobby uh collected cards as a kid mostly basketball cards uh Penny Hardway uh was my was my guy and and you know during the the early Orlando Magic days with him and and Shaq was you know uh I don't know if you remember Lil Penny uh commercials that that were always on so that really spoke to me and so my collection was very very Penning Hard Away heavy uh I wish I would have chosen Michael Jordan instead uh my my bank account would have enjoyed that a little bit more but uh but yeah so that's where it started uh just started getting to to the golf cart collecting hobby uh about a year ago um kind of saw different things on on social media that really got me interested in looking at all the possibilities there and started going to some shows and and uh met somebody who was a part of the Facebook group uh Aaron uh which randomly uh I took a couple lessons from uh at a gol Tech here in Indiana uh so it was pretty funny that I was like I know who you are uh and so it's good to see eron every time I go out to those shows but uh kind of a grown for there I started uh collecting all golfers memorabilia cards autograph cards and and numbered cards but have really started just to focus on tiger Tiger's the reason why I got interested in the game and uh and kind of even to this day I love seeing him out there even though it's kind of a shell of himself but I really have started to uh increase my uh kind of exposure to to tiger cards and memorabilia cards and autographs are are where I focus but recently started getting into to more numbered cards and uh working into to creating some uh colored rainbow sets cool cool yeah I know people who are big golf fans and golf players themselves tend to gravitate towards memorabilia and autographs and I used to think of it as like the Primitive style of collecting like it's the most obvious stuff right is if you didn't know much about cards you're like well yeah of course I want a piece of their glove or their shirt or yeah I want their autograph but I've almost done it like a 180 and again I'm still obsessed personally with the shiny stuff but I'm starting to get more and more of appreciation for the autographs of memorabilia because maybe there's a reason why that's like the stuff that people I think naturally gravitate towards and uh and selling off all your other players and focusing on tiger I mean not that it matters what I think but I think that's a a pretty smart move I think focusing your collection instead of just going broad swings like I've been doing over the last few years I think that's a smart move just financially and just in terms of you know having focus on your own PC so that's awesome um but you know today I wanted to talk about another player so although you might not have players of this card I think I think you're still a fan and I think uh both of us uh agree he's probably one of the hottest players right now potentially the hottest player right now and somebody who just recently got some cards for and that is Xander shafley so you know right now uh with his two major wins uh this year do you think that was a bit of a surprise or were those a long time coming for Xander definitely a long time coming uh Xander has always had the talent to to do it uh the biggest uh I guess ding against Xander was everyone said he couldn't finish on Sundays and and the data actually shows that differently Xander's Strokes gain on Sundays is one of the best in on the PGA tour he just never would go you know 63 on a Sunday to to finish off uh a tournament and at a major so he's always been there and has has had close calls I don't know if the Masters uh three or four years ago he was T2 with or he was first with three or four holes to play and unfortunately had a tough uh 16th hole uh at the Masters and I think he either bogied or double bogied uh that kind of hurt his chances so once he saw that putt go in on Sunday uh at the PGA it was like you know the top cut came off and that putt didn't go in very easily it it lipped in so you could see the relief on his face so always was a long time coming the fact that he backed it up I mean there's a lot of pundants saying that the the PGA is probably the easiest major to win uh it's the most like just a traditional PGA tournament uh in terms of just uh how difficult the course is set up so for for him to back it up at a very different venue uh obviously very different conditions with the with the the open uh was was huge so I I think you know he's he's somebody to to be uh not scared about but he's he's got potential to rack off a number of these in in the the next couple years he is older he's 30 uh so it's it's not like he's young young in his career but the talent has always been there yeah it's funny when you say he's younger and he's 30 because we look at guys like um Rory malcol Roy and you know other guys that are in their 30s and it's like yeah he's younger than them you know I always picture him as kind of the same age as some of them but yeah I mean he's kind of that middle you know veteran let's just say like he's he's younger than some of those longer standing guys on the tour but he's he's older than the next crop like uh Scotty and uh you know even Colin morawa and Bryson to Sho I think is's only 28 maybe maybe yeah so so yeah Sanders's kind of in that middle ground and with you just said something that caught my attention you know they said the pundits said the PGA is the easiest major to win and that it Sparks a memory because uh the the last Olympics what was it 2020 I'm sure it was supposed to be 2020 I forget when it was actually held yeah 2021 I guess um and so when he won the Olympics uh the only I think or him and Justin Rose maybe you know only one or two maybe three uh modern golf players to have ever won a gold Med medal at the Olympics um when that happened I I remember being a bit disappointed I remember thinking like Xander you know I thought of him as one of these just random in middle of the field tour players at the time and uh and you know I'm sure on a personal level like if I had any connection to him or whatever I would have been very happy to him but just not having that connection I thought man I really wish a superstar would have won it because the Olympics isn't really won by you know just at Joel Joel blows or whatever in any other sport right like in in track and field it's all about athleticism so the Usain Bolt the whoever the the best of the best is going to win and so to see him win the Olympics was disappointing for me at the time when he backed backed that up with a major win at the PGA that validated for me his win at the Olympics in the past I thought wow okay finally that is a moment for me where where Xander can in my books deserve the Olympic gold medal that he won and then to hear that pundits were still kind of downplaying that is kind of funny and and maybe and and I look when I see winners of the PG in the past and that's their only major title I also have that little bit of a feeling it's like you know yeah but that they didn't win a Masters or or an open you know those are the two in my eyes that really matters so when I look at Brooks kco with his five wins but it's only the US Open in the PGA that not that it has an asterisk on it but it's it's almost like well if you know if I compare that to another five-time major Champion but they've got different Majors I almost put that other player ahead of him um I really hope that his at the open silences all those pundits yeah I don't see how it can't I mean two majors in a year is you know that's kind of rarified error uh so the fact that he was and again there's so vastly different styles of golf too so that that that in itself uh hopefully I said hopefully he continues to back it up and just builds that much bigger of a resume but I think that part of Xander's biggest issue is he's not a big personality you know he's not Bryson to Shambo Bryson is out there and kind of gaining fans and xanders pretty quiet keeps to himself doesn't do you know a whole lot of uh Media or anything like that that golf is missing that and and the the whole Bryson thing having him back would be huge for the game of golf because he does give that golf doesn't have very many villains anymore and so uh Xander being more recognized for his golf game because he's winning is is a huge win for him you know I agree Bryson is the the new I'm not going to call him the new arold palmer but but that's kind of the uh air that he's bringing to the golf course uh high-fiving all the fans before the final round uh doing what he's doing to grow the game on YouTube and all that stuff I'm a big Bryson fan and it it makes me wonder uh the the next topic I wanted to talk about is a player of the year because Scotty Sheffer was running away with it and obviously Bryson won a major this year and and it made me wonder if Bryson had won the US Open or sorry the the British Open you know would he have been in contention for player of the year because obviously he would have had two wins and he would have turned from heel to Fan Favorite you know in a matter of less than a year um you know the discussion I wanted to talk about was you know it has has Scotty Sheffer been eclipsed by Xander but before we get there what do you think of just hypothetically what if Bryson had done it what if Bryson had two majors this year yeah technically he wouldn't be able to win it because it's a PGA award which you know that's the whole live thing but I I think he wouldd be in the conversation I mean it's hard not to uh the only thing that he can't really back up is he hasn't had a lot of success on Liv and so you know he's obviously had some top 10 and some high finishes but uh if he were to dominate Liv and win two uh Majors then yeah absolutely uh it it's for somebody to bring new eyes in or or you know cting the younger crowd which golf you know always is wanting to do Bryson's the guy and and he's the guy that can that really brings that connection uh in so if he were to win uh one of the other Majors you know by all absolutely the US Open is is one of the toughest and the the uh his ability to to show up there was was impressive I'm actually playing Pinehurst in September so I'm uh excited to see uh what I score because I'm sure it'll be uh a tough but overall I think Scotty and Xander are pretty much neck and neck I am 100% a majors mean a whole heck of a lot more um it's they're the best Fields uh because there are live golfs that are included uh and they're the toughest tests um so him having two majors compared obviously compared to one which with Scotty is important Scotty has won an abnormal amount of money this year uh and he his wins excuse me his wins Are all uh Signature Events or not all but of our Signature Events for him to have you know he's on the money list is $27 million already that is outrageous um so I think they're neck and neck I think the FedEx playoffs are going to be key if if either one of them can can win one of those or wins the uh the FedEx Cup which is the the end of year tournament uh in August at East Lake if one of those whoever does better in the playoffs to me is probably who should be the player of the year six wins is incredible I mean that hasn't been done in a long time that's we you know we're talking tiger numbers uh when it comes to that so I I think it's it's still up in the air if I had to vote today I'd probably lean Scotty only because of his dominance uh and you know a bad week for him like nobody was talking about Scotty Sheffer at the British Open and he was the top 10 and and so like that that's a bad week for him which is wild yeah especially how he finished because you know I think he bogied uh either the last or the second to last hole and that uh screwed me out of about $350 yeah he doubl he had a double bogey on the back back nine and that basically he nobody paid attention to him after that but yeah so I think Scotty is Edge so but if Xander were to win another gold medal which is going on uh as we as we talk and or uh you know have potential to to to take one of those FedEx events I think Xander would take it two two majors is a big deal so um I'm I'm glad you said that right now in the St in your mind standings that Scotty has a bit of an edge because my intuition says the same thing even though I'm with you I think major wins is the most important thing uh but Scotty's just been so darn dominant like you could nobody could touch Scotty and this conversation wouldn't even been happening if any other player had won at the Open Championship Scotty would be there would not even a conversation know no contest he would be Player of the Year Xander just pulls it out of a hat two two majors so now he's in the conversation but I think Scotty's still front runner um and then what you said earlier is if either of them were to win the Tour Championship which by the way I think it's between them I don't know if there's a lot of other guys in contention for TOUR Championship of course there will be once once that final event uh starts I think they're still doing the staggered start so Scotty will probably be like 10 under par and Xander will be nine under par and then uh you know anybody below that you know maybe the fir the next two players might have a shot but I would say it's really between them um so that okay so that's an interesting idea basically which whichever of them really pulls it off at the Tour Championship deserves it what about the Olympics if either of Scotty or Xander were to win the Olympics could that also push it over the edge yeah I mean it would help uh no question I mean xanders obviously already has a gold medal so he kind of has the experience in knowing what it's like uh I think I would almost equivalent the Olympics to a similar a tour stop so just a not not necessarily signature event and you could probably say it's almost like a live event in terms of it's a limited field there's only 60 or so players I'd say about half of those players are not you know PGA Tour quality or or live or the top tier live quality players so you know quite frankly the the the talent pool is probably 30 guys are capable of winning that tournament uh so I I think that that being such a limited uh field and a talent level I would I would consider it just you know if Xander or Scotty were to go win last week the 3M open which they didn't play but if they were to win that's how I would equivalate uh the Olympics it's it's definitely not a major it's probably not a signature event but it would be just like a regular PGA Tour uh stop okay so my mind uh can get burdened a little bit by the just The Prestige of the Olympics because uh although it's an amateur event you know being a track and field athlete from you know high school and and that sort of thing track and field was always I held it in high regard and the Olympics was the epitom me the the the the best of the best in track and field so I hold uh the Olympics near and dear in my heart but it's nice to get a dose of reality that from a professional golf perspective you know it's a limited field and that you know the winner if either of them were to win it would help their case for player of the year but like if Xander won the Olympics again but then scotter won Scotty won the Tour Championship the Tour Championship might have been maybe a trickier uh feet although maybe not because although there's better uh a better field he's starting with that 10-stroke Advantage um so you know maybe maybe they're kind of on the same Level Playing Field when you put it in that light I think you're probably right because yes the it's 30 it's the top 30 golfers of the PGA but also you know Scotty's gonna have so he'll have minus 10 and then second is minus eight so at worst he'll have a two- shot lead over everybody but he'll have a 10 shot lead over half the field uh 10 shots for anybody is a lot but for somebody playing as well as Scotty is incredibly a lot so I think your your uh comparison is actually pretty close um in terms of just the ability to to to win those tournaments so uh I try not to play too highly up on the FedEx Cup just because it's quite frankly it's a corporate event that turns into a big money grab but it's fun to watch the biggest thing that is something to to be interested in is Scott has not performed real well at at East Lake Xander has uh Rory has dominated that event for the most part uh but Xander has better course history there and it it goes there every year and so it'll be interesting to see uh how it plays out because of that absolutely so let's shift this into cards because this is a podcast about Golf and not just about golf but also about trading cards sports cards and we got something recently that was really exciting and that's the 2024 Topps Chrome Olympics golf re release and that is just Team USA people so as a Canadian I miss out on some of my uh national pride but you know yourself and a lot of other Americans that are listening to this U probably recognize a lot of those names and are fans of those players the only golfers that we get are Xander shafley and there's a lady golfer I'm defin I've I've butchered her name and I've not done her Legacy Justice because I believe she's a very talented player but it I don't really care about her so let's talk about Xander um yeah I think go ahead well obviously the fact that we've got four American golfers in the Olympics which is more than a lot of other countries for Canada we only have Nick Taylor and Corey Connors but for the United States there's Ander shafley Scotty shuffler Colin morawa and Windham Clark I kind of wish that they had taken Liv into higher consideration and that maybe Bry and to Shambo could have got in that fourth spot instead of Windam um but hey uh we only got Xander shley cards out of those four guys would have been incredible to get Scotty as well because we're in in high need of getting some Scotty shuffler cards but Xander schafle as we've talked about he's he's one of them the guys this year so to get some cards I'm not going to complain um so the tops Chrome you know product only having one golfer even though he's got different different inserts he's got a couple base cards lots of different parallels some autographs I'm still personally not ripping the product I'm not buying the hobby boxes or blasters because it's kind of a long shot to hit a card of that one player you know have you been opening any of the products no I haven't similarly I I kind of was in The Ripping game early on and then I realized that there's if I want a card I'll just go get itth type thing um so it's interesting the reason why obviously Xander highlighted is because of his gold medal uh three years ago uh and so the the difficult part that you've talked about you know at nauseum on this on the show is is for the golf cards to be able to time when good things happen and tops just got very lucky and kind of hit one out of the park that this release around the Olympics also happened to coincide with the time when Xander wins two majors and so tops is loving this because uh anybody who is want you know wants to collect Xander this is your opportunity this is your only opportunity and so that that worked out you know massively well in their favor so uh it's been it's been I I'm interested in finding a Xander card at some point uh but uh because of the timing you know the market is about as hot as it'll ever be uh if you were to win it again uh which is possible uh it would even get hotter and so it's just like uh kind of letting that storm uh pass a little bit and then and then do a search after that whenever a new product comes out there's always a grace period of weeks maybe even a couple months for the product to uh get hyped up spike in prices and then start settling downward and I personally start looking at new products maybe six months down the road before I really start buying the cards that I want especially the higher end stuff cuz you don't want to spend 2 3x uh you know what the cards can be worth with less than a year later um that said I did buy isander shafley card and it's a little bit of a Funny Story I mean I made a mistake um you know I love I love some of the cards that uh Xander's got now um a lot of them are really cool uh and I really like the Retro um I forget what it's called but it's like the 1950s or' 7s or something like that retro style of card and there's obviously different parallels there's a ging out of 99 there's a gold out of 50 there's an orange out of 25 there's a red out of five black out of 10 and and I've been following I personally like the color gold I like out of 50 so I was trying to to to get one for a good deal now a few nights ago uh I was getting pretty tired at the end of the night before going to bed and dangerous I know scrolling through my watch list and I saw one of them that was uh listed a little bit less than the others so I clicked on it hit send offer typed in $45 and I wanted the gold one I thought you know what I think this is a very fair price probably more than what the card's going to be worth months later I thought I just I really want this card I want something to enjoy during the Olympics well the uh seller accepted immediately I thought wow okay uh great I went to go pay and I realized I sent it for the wrong parallel so instead of that retro one that I really liked I send it for this kind of for pride and country is the insert said not my thing you know we're not interested in collecting cards that we're not visually interested in so we'll see I actually sent the seller a note right away saying hey I'm so sorry that I I I I'll pay if you want me to I thought this was a different card so if you're willing to cancel this uh I would appreciate it if you're going to you know say this is a binding contract then I'll pay and I haven't heard back yet so uh so we'll see what they say but like aside from that you know I there there's probably four or five different insert sets that are really intriguing I'm scrolling through eBay right now uh something that got posted recently that's really nice for you high-end listeners this is 2024 uh Xander shafley jumbo patch relic superator one of one and the patch is uh white with red letters and it says us so I don't know if you can get more patriotic than that beautiful beautiful looking card some other cards that really stood out to me to me are the patch autographs uh that are serial numbered out of 10 and there's also one out of five uh that superfractor I mentioned is actually listed for what I think is a really reasonable price on eBay at $1,99 so $1,100 basically uh some of the out of 10 and out of five patch autographs same kind of thing th000 to $2,000 I mean what like what are your thoughts on those really high-end cards yeah I mean terms of price those are pricing like tiger Autos right now which that's expensive I mean you can get a uh typically you can get a good tiger autograph for about a thousand maybe a little bit more obviously some of the the highering cards are uh or the the earlier CS are are much more than that so I think the My Hope with Xander obviously outside of some cooling of the market is is you know clearly he shown some willingness to be a part of the card market now and so hopefully you know whenever the next uh Upper Deck product comes out obviously the one that's coming out here soon but you know three four years from now hopefully he'll be a part of that conversation so hopefully it's just a willingness to be a part of future uh uh releases and so I I said Xander's awesome uh he just doesn't have he's not the big personality the the kind of the fan favorite to to Really uh expect to get those prices on a long-term basis now if he goes on and wins you know six to 10 more majors then maybe maybe he is but uh that's it's a lot of predictive things you got to figure out you mentioned that the Xander cards are priced the same as a Tiger Woods Auto I hear you and and I agree and I and I do think that they'll settle like if this uh $1,200 uh patch autograph card out of 10 settles to $500 $700 $900 you know may maybe it will however to play Devil's Advocate um you know you're comparing Ander schley's best Cards Against Tiger Woods random autographs and Tiger Woods has been signing cards for decades like 20 30 years probably not quite 30 years but 20 to 25 years and so there's a huge abundance of Tiger Woods autographs whereas you know Xander has a very limited amount of cards and so if if you were to just compare the total market cap obviously multiplying a few hundred autographs through from Xander schafle versus tens of thousands of autographs maybe even more of Tiger Woods it's like yeah on an individual card by card basis they could be worth the same but you know it's a lot harder to find a Xander shafley autograph card than a Tiger Woods autograph card so you're paying for that scarcity um and and also the fact that like it's premium it's the nicest xanders offl card like if you were to compare that to the nicest Tiger Woods card you're paying six figures you know so um so there's that aspect and then um before I forget uh you said you know the next Upper Deck release gosh you said three to four years gosh I hope it's not that long you know if there's upper decks employees listening to this please don't you know after 2021 we were so excited and it was it was a bummer to find out we had to wait till 2024 for the next cards please don't make us wait until 2027 um then and then to to round off my response to some of the stuff you just said um you know I agree like if if Xander Schley uh were to uh this demonstrates that he's willing to sign willing to have some kind of relationship with a card manufacturer and if you were to sign with Upper Deck then we would get some great uh Xander shley cards my worry would be you know what does that do to these tops Chrome cards Topps Chrome is an incredible brand year-over-year has a a legacy as better as good as any other card brand uh because of its relevancy in baseball tops Chrome basketball was huge from the late 90s through to the 2009 kind of era and so I do think think it can be resilient these Olympics Xander shofy cards can be resilient because the brand tops Chrome is incredible it's iconic uh and although it's not PGA licensed it's not like like live or like a a leaf or whatever where it's just a just pure player license card it does still have that association with the Olympics and so uh when it comes to golf cards we don't have logos and team names on our cards and things like that so whether it's PGA licensed live licensed Olympics licensed you know it's got this governing body that it's It's associated to so it's not just kind of random whatever and and some of the cards are on card autographs and stuff so there there's some really really nice cards here you know if ier deck were to get Xander shafley though it would definitely add to his population to his card count as a collector that would make me happy as someone who wants really rare stuff you know the the the relevancy that the the the that comes to mind is Jordan spe Jordan spe doesn't have golf cards he's got some Sports Illustrated for kids but in 2016 uh uh Topps baseball and Topps Chrome baseball he had a first pitch card and so that first pitch card had the the refractor looking one had a out of red out of five orange out of 25 green out of 99 uh superator that kind of stuff and so if I I personally wish that Upper Deck could have gotten Jordan spe and had him in products but if it did what would it do to those tops Chrome cards yeah no I think I think you're you nailed it on the head as far as if somebody grabs one of these Xander cards early and he isn't a part of uh any future releases you've got you know you're you've got the very limited release of of what uh what he the only thing that's out there and those are going to continue to be valuable and will only grow in value as hopefully he wins you know a couple more Majors here and there so uh I can definitely see both sides of the coin awesome awesome to finish up I wanted to kind of round out the card offering this is not a review of the checklist or anything like that but just give listeners an idea of what kind of Olympic Xander shle carts are out there we talked about the high-end stuff super refractors patch autographs out of 10 out of five uh the next tier down I would say is some of his other autographs so he's got a variety of different uh parallels different variations of autographs some of them are sticker autographs some of them are on-card autographs they are all numbered out of 99 or less so they're all let's say rare but you know if you were to add them all up there could be seven or eight maybe even eight maybe even nine different styles of autographed cards so some of them are low numbered out of 510 some of them are out of 99 some of them are out of 50 out of 73 there's a bunch of different numbering so there's there's definitely hundreds of autograph cards um before I move on to kind of the lower end stuff what do you any any comments on the autograph cards yeah I mean it's it's basically uh what you're looking for if you're just looking for an easy uh Xander autograph I I think it's it's uh accessible U obviously the the Rarity and kind of uh the kind of the top tier stuff is is is more uh what I would what I would gravitate towards but at the same time I think that there's there's a lot of value in just saying hey I've got one of Xander's autographs in one of his early cars and I think that can be just as exciting I would gravitate towards him as well I admire your focus on your collection because you've given up most other players and you're just collecting Tiger Woods you're focusing on some of those ncer cards and when you do that you can focus in on these nicer cards um you know me my collection is just so darn wide and and let's say in some degrees it's in the shallow end you know I can't necessarily uh and that's a reference to a podcast by Iowa Dave awesome podcast if anybody wants to check it out but uh you know playing in the shallow end means that I can't necessarily afford a th000 superator or really nice patch autograph even though I love to maybe someday but uh you know I might strive for one of those autographs that we just hit on or I think most I would gravitate towards some of his kind of Base parallels let's say so that's the third tier of cards we're going to talk about which is the base cards the actual base cards I mean if you're a set collector or you just want to spend a dollar on a card you know you could you could check out that sort of stuff the very least I'd be looking into the refractor cards that have some shine to them and then I'd be looking into some of the colored parallels I mentioned I really like gold TOS Chrome has historically always been numbered out of 50 for the gold cards although that's not true for every year every sport um yeah and then and then I look into like the orange out of 25s the black out of 10 uh you know what are your thoughts on on kind of the shiny parallel kind of cards yeah I mean I think the the biggest thing is preference uh we talked prior about this is what do you think looks cool and and for you it's it's kind of the gold and uh I I think that that is those cards pop and kind of uh show uh you're you're excited to show them off you're excited to look at them and kind of get joy from that as well so uh I think that some of the the tops Chrome cards that have come out have an awesome look and just that in itself you know I know the Panini stuff is coming out later this year and and we I'm hopeful that their cards also look cool and have kind of the appeal I it call it the window appeal so to speak of you can just walk by and say who you know kind of take a double double take so I think that uh it's really kind of just a preference on on what you like and and hope that uh there's there's some some good things that appeal to each person MH absolutely I think the fact that I accidentally bought the wrong parallel uh or not wrong parallel I did it was the gold out of 50 but it was the wrong insert um I mean I'm just I'm just spitballing here but maybe that means I need to collect the run I need to collect the gold out of 50 for each of the Xander shle cards and I guess I'm announcing it here that's that's one of my goals for the next two years let's say so I'm always sort of a set collector I like collecting uh you know complete sets of of different things so maybe that's my next mission my next project um yeah I I agree like just to my final comments I I think these parallels can kind of look cool uh different Parallels for different inserts so for instance he's got a horizontal card from the Set uh it's it's sort of a smaller image it's like a full body shot instead of more of like a portrait shoulders to head kind of image and uh and so like I like these horizontal shots where the player is small because there's a couple of iconic cards like the 200 I think seven Topps Chrome uh Kobe Bryant card uh he's doing kind of this reverse layup kind of card and uh the 2020 uh prison LeBron James where he's doing a Kobe tribute uh and there's a Canadian flag in the background of that card I don't just little shout out to Canada in that one um so this this Xander shle the horizontal it's numbered 150 out of the set so it's actually the very last card in the checklist I'm gravitated towards the styling of this card even though a lot of people don't like horizontal cards and the parallel that I like and I probably shouldn't talk about cards that I want to personally get because others might gra brings attention to them but I will is the US flag parallel so it's got the Stars and Stripes uh behind him uh the base card has just like a picture with like a bunch of people standing in the background everybody's wearing masks because it's during the covid pandemic um so the the base kind of version or even like the colored parallels like the green out of 99 or the gold are nice but they don't like there's something about the US flag version where they cut out the back CR of the picture and they just replace it with an American flag and it just looks so patriotic you know not even being an American it just looks like a cool uh let's say resemblance to you know what what the Olympics means to him as an American well I think that the the Olympics and the flag in your country is so important so I think that that just shows kind of what the Olympics are about you're representing your country and uh I that's a very cool looking card I think it's it's interesting that uh Upper Deck had the national hero flag or national hero cards that came out that uh have have both a silver and a gold parallel that's not similar but kind of in the same breath and those cards look awesome too yeah absolutely you know another one that comes to mind is the I I mentioned the for pride and Country card that I bought by accident um you know although I I don't like the card the picture does have like a bit of a Sunset and so the orange parallel out of 25 you know my eyes gravitate to that one a bit more than the gold or the red or the black or whatever even those those other numbers are all lower numbered the orange one kind of matches the styling of the card so just the the artist admiration in my collecting uh gravitates to words the parallels that look cool anyways that's that's enough on cards um you know any any final thoughts Adam before uh before we wrap up no I said I've enjoyed having the conversation and really uh I think that what you what you do is is great and kind of bring some light to to golf uh both Golf and golf C collecting and and I think that as the hobby continues to grow and and we'll we'll be excited and I love trying to predict what what's the next uh you know who's the next golfer to sign on with somebody and and get excited about their cards awesome awesome Adam I was hoping to get to one more topic today we don't have time but uh the the questions came from mailbag so Pat Bonnet had asked how should entries for the Olympics golf work um you know world golf rankings or country picking their own players and and the fact that Liv kind of gave the shaft to certain players and then Austin Bailey had also asked uh giving a disclaimer it's a bit of a controversial uh topic but that you know that that um there's a debate going on for Player of the Year between Xander and Scotty and it just brings to light how to compare different events different the the value of winning a major versus an everyday average PGA Tour event versus an elevated event and how the world rankings are you know Main mained so this is stuff I'd like to get into someday with you because you I I understand are are definitely more of a a golf Enthusiast and you're very knowledgeable on the inner workings of the sport so how's that sound you want to talk about that another time absolutely I like I said I think it's it's smart to uh dedicate some more time to that because the owgr uh has some flaws uh and and there probably needs to be some change the the prime example you gave of Bryson probably should have been the fourth guy to make it to the Olympics undoubted it should have been uh wiam Clark's a great player but Bryson is definitely somebody who should have been in that top four and so would love to to be able to kind of do a deep dive in in what the owgr is and and kind of the strength of fields and how that works there we go Bryson we hope to see you in the Olympics 2028 uh Austin and Pat thanks for the questions Adam and I will collaborate uh in in a episode coming up pretty soon to answer your questions uh anybody else who enjoys you know hearing mailbag portion make sure you comment on those posts in the Facebook group golf cards at memorabilia or even just shoot me a DM and say hey it'd be interesting to hear you cover this topic on a future episode that's about it thanks Adam awesome thank you and I quite enjoyed that conversation with Adam uh getting to know the perspective of the card hobby from a relatively newcomer but somebody who's very smart about the sport of golf and the current events the players the systems I think that'll be a really fun uh relationship to continue Adam uh and in terms of this conversation you know uh just we talked about prices and whatnot and uh Adam and I both refer to the fact that when a product comes out it's extremely hot and prices cool off we are already starting to see prices moving I would say dropping cooling uh put it lightly um for example the patch autograph out of 10 is already selling much lower lower in the range of 53 $35 the uh numbered out of five Dynasty patch autograph sold for $650 so you know those those prices are two three times lower already than the numbers we were sharing uh the gold serial uh numbered out of 50 cards those were selling for uh 104050 $60 and now they're down to in the teens 20s and 30s so you know just be weary when a brand new product comes out if you're breaking you're feeling like a gambler you're a ripper you like to open the product yourself doesn't really make much of a difference you can open the product uh at any time it's actually better early on because you'll hit those cards when they are worth quite a bit but once they cool down if you're buying singles just just hold off you know I I have actually bought a couple more Xander cards since the one that I mentioned to Adam uh fortunately though that seller was a was a buddy uh not somebody I knew but they were very kind to cancel the order when I communicated that it was an accident uh I mixed it up with another card uh but uh I did pick up two other zener cards a Flames parallel out of 25 and the Retro parallel that I mentioned red out of five now I bought the red out of five just because it's extremely rare and I don't know if I would see another one and honestly I thought the price was very fair and then the orange Flames uh card I I got this one and I think I will really like the card but I got it because the orange color matches the image you know it's all about art as I've mentioned before uh serial numbering out of 25 is also scarce enough that I can really appreciate it now there's one other reason is that the same card serial number outa five the red parallel did pop up on eBay and it was listed for $300 American and it just it was outside of my price range but I really admired it I thought it looked amazing and of course somebody worked out a deal right away for the card and and then I had some remorse like I I Mi I regretted not winning the card or at least sending a fair offer now looking back you know I do wish I had that card but for the hundreds of dollars it would have taken to own that card I managed to get the orange which sort of matches it actually looks quite good for gosh $30 you know a tenth of the price so uh if you find something out there that's uh stunning in your eyes uh but outside of your price range go find another similar type of card that is it is absurd that I got through this entire episode uh post Olympics and I haven't even mentioned the results so if you're listening to this podcast I'm sure you know who won the Olympic gold medal uh if there happens to be some card nerds who are tuning in and we're not following golf I guess this is probably the most exciting part of the show so Xander Schley was in the mix he was in fact you know right up at the top of the leaderboard up until uh you know through the first three days uh final rounds sort of fell the wheels fell off the card for Xander uh but some other stars kind of made it to the top of the leaderboard with five holes to play Xander shle was I believe five Strokes back or something like that it was not a good situation in fact his odds to win were worse than i' ever seen them in any event involving Scotty was likeus 4,000 minus $5,000 so you bet $100 you Win4 $5,000 normally it's like two or three or four to one for Scotty to even win an event anyways someone in the funneling cardboard golf card pools group chat just threw $10 on Scotty to win at minus 4,000 odds and he pulled it off so congrats and for also Diamond handing that coming down the stretch because you could have cashed it in for less than the actual ticket value but Mama didn't raise no wuss in you Ryan but back to Scotty he was almost stunned that he won the event I mean I think he believed in himself but the emotion that he showed after winning the Olympic gold medal was more than I'm used to seeing Scotty uh Scotty's passionable Golf and he loves it but he doesn't identify fully with it I think that win meant something so special to him uh representing his country he clearly has a lot of national pride and I don't know if I could have thought of a more deserving gold medalist in any event in the Olympics uh nonetheless in golf so congrats Scotty and to all you listeners out there let's talk golf cards again check out the golf cards at
