with power still out in some neighborhoods people took advantage of a new resource in New Orleans a cool place to wait David Jones tells us more about the community lighthouses yeah these are churches faith-based institutions community centers that have been outfitted with solar panels and batteries to provide a reprieve for residents without power immediately after storms they is not working like we're just kind of you know taking it minute by minute across Orleans par thousands of residents remain without power including in Broadmore and the neighbor told us about it and we're like oh that's great and the AC alone is worth just walking in here Broadmore Community Church was one of the first participants in together New Orleans Community Lighthouse program nine have been activated across New Orleans as the city recovers from Francine's impacts besides a cool place to rest they also provide food shelter games and books and charging out outlets for devices Broadmore was one of the first to come online and so we we've been operating with our solar panels since March 25th for pastor Gregory Manning serving as a community Lighthouse was a no-brainer we distribute 10,000 pounds of food per week to members of the community so we're just going to continue to serve so having the solar panels here gives us the ability not to be encumbered by when our lights go out we got to keep on doing the work that we believe that God has called us to do through donations City and Federal Federal funding the project aims to create the largest network of solar and storage resilience hubs equipping buildings with solar panels and batteries to store energy I grew up in Broadmore so it's pretty special to see the community Lighthouse be in use the idea started after Hurricane Ida left much of the metro area without power for days a number of locations are planned around New Orleans with others eventually coming online to serve other parishes just coming together especially after um times like this after a hurricane just seeing that um while people are going through their own situations with their own homes they're still coming together to support the community so this is why I love to say because it's always got something for everybody even when we're in the point like this there's always something to eat there's always something to talk to you know there's always something to do Broadmore Community Church opens tomorrow again from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. new wine Christian Fellowship in llaa is is also serving that Community there from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Meg
