Keir Starmer promises a 'painful' Budget

K St has just finished delivering one of his first speeches ahead of the new parliamentary time and the main message is that painful times are here to stay I'll have to turn to the country and make big asks of you as well to accept short-term pain for long-term good it seemed to me that he was perfectly prepared to take some of those incredibly tough incredibly difficult and perhaps unpopular choices in order to do the things he really wants to do in Downing Street he defended that very controversial decision to take winter fuel payments off some pensioners saying it was right that the people with the broadest shoulders would take the biggest burden he said that he would do all he could to try and root out 14 years of Tory rot at the heart of government and promised that his government would do things a little differently however he faced accusations and questions about rouss around cronyism by appointing top labor donors to jobs within government he said it was right that people would be going into those jobs in the right places and defended their use
