[Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] hi Mom well hello we've we quite quite an adventure we have and so um I want to call this the Paris Chronicles fans of the podcast you've been with us on this really long journey and it has been a long journey over a year but um the big news is mlin got his passport and we left the country how exciting was that the passport pow I did it did it make you feel like an adult like you had jumped through all the Hoops that the government and Society had placed in front of you to actually get this passport renewed I don't know if that's it I mean it made me hate uh the government and Society more what is what are these games that we're playing these are madeup borders uh it's nonsense but you know we made it we did it well but you got the passport so it should be Pro finally got it after all the Hoops I had to jump through I don't know they made they made me tap dance for him so the big news is we got the passport and we went to Y um we had one of my favorite weeks that we've ever had in our lives because we went to the Olympics in Paris and we were just fans and we got tickets we primarily went and supported USA basketball women's team shout out eight straight gold medals the most dominant Women's Basketball team in the world but we also did some other events we went to track and field um um where I have just become obsessed with every track and field athlete that we got to see in person what was your favorite part of going to the Olympics with your mom I don't know the whole thing the whole thing was really fun uh the Eiffel Tower at the end was great um see seeing Stewie win gold was awesome um and being you know hanging out with them was great just the whole the whole event was really it was just really something um yeah I loved it all the track and field stuff was really cool it's it's nice to have that moment where you do feel the camaraderie and like you're like I've never seen any of these people before and I've never cared about like 5,000 meter runs but then I just saw that there was one dude from BYU and I was just like yeah let's go so just like little stuff like that you know yeah it's it's such a you become such a fan of anybody from the USA you get such a rooting interest it's really kind of cool and all of the stories that come out of there so one of my favorite things that we did did was we got to watch the women's 4x400 meter final and so we saw Sydney Sydney mcclaflin levrone and Gabby Thomas and that whole team run in person we got to see the men's high jump which came down to a jump off which was extremely exciting with Shelby mccuan um who competed at the University of Alabama we saw the women's javelin throw and we fell in love with the world record holder from Japan she was amazing yeah she was great loved her that was one of our favorite things I thought she became the first Japanese woman to ever win the javelin so made some history right in front of us and she was amazing yeah and um I think we saw three or four Olympic records um an American record we did not see a world record but I I felt like we saw some personal bests so I really thought that track and field was amazing and I wanted to ask you this question I'm very curious because anytime I go to track and field I'm obsessed like I used to be obsessed I I got to see Carl Lewis run in person Michael Johnson run in person like I've been to the US um Olympic trials before at Hayward Field in Oregon I I really love track and field why do we not care about track and field year round and why are these people not household names I don't know it's boring it's not it's because it's the we like the stuff that's combos I think the stuff that's big year round are combos you know like there's a little bit of Sprints in in baseball you know and then like football has hurdles and Javelin throwing because they got to throw the ball like I think we like the stuff that's a little bit more complicated it's just so simple that I think it's like when there's a lot of it going on it's really cool but like year round and like you know and also it's big business I don't think there's a lot of like incorporate like it's not like a situation where like everybody's like oh we got to tune in to watch this person run for like it's hard to build events around like a 30 second thing but when it's the Olympics it's so built up which I think I think that makes sense I think it should be kind of like that I just was thinking I wish I saw more track and field and I do wish we put more on television it's really big in Europe and I do think we should have more watching track and field oh yeah they they have stadiums that are filled with really big events like in the Monaco Grand Prix there's all kinds of really big events just catered to track and field in Europe so I do think my personal opinion is we should do that more in the United States I would pay to go see track and field if we had more marketing more events where we could actually go and support because I'm just going to tell you this the women's 100 meter hurdles that we saw Messi wrestle of the United States win by four oh no what do she win by 101 100ths of a point yeah 10 1,000 I'm so bad with math she she won it was like 12.34 versus 12.33 so that's 1/100th right I'm so bad with the decimals she won by 1/100th of a of a second Messi Russell of the US and it it was just really one of the most thrilling things I've ever seen in person in all the sports I've covered for 35 years I just thought that was one of the most electric moments I've ever seen wow well yeah I thought it was great traveling with Mom how was that how how did we do traveling together so I was I was I was thinking about this just you know as we're podcasting and like getting back into it and a big conversation we were having was working and vacation I think we should talk about this on the pop I think let's do I think your work AOL because you were working on the trip that's that's been fully established I I am a workaholic but but in my defense I will say this it's because I I really really love what I do for my job but so two things happened on the trip um first thing that happened was one of my jobs is for the Utah Jazz and low marinan signed a big new extension with Utah Jazz it was breaking news that happened while we were there and so one of the days Days of our 7-day trip I flew to Finland to Helsinki Finland to do a sit down interview with low and see where he comes from in his hometown it was really really cool and then I flew back late that night so yes I probably didn't need to do that but I wanted to do that because what other opportunity am I going to have in my life to go to Helsinki Finland that's not what I'm talking about I'm talking about live tweeting every game and like coming up with stats you know like I do appreciate it but it's even it's like even with the podcast this is technically not about your work but we get a little bit of work we get a little work Mom in here while we're doing the podcast and I just think it's I wantan I want to talk about it because I think it's interesting I I think people want to actually you know they want us to be vulnerable and we're talking and this is a conversation between Mom and son so I think this is something I think that's a thing I I definitely think I'm a workaholic honey I will say that my only defense for myself is it's not it's not a defense stop saying you need to defend yourself it's a conversation so much I love sports so much that that I'm there and I'm watching these women run and I'm watching all this stuff and I'm like oh my gosh this is so great I've got to tell everybody about it it's not that I'm working it's that I love it so much what I'm seeing and I just want to share it you're you're very right I could probably just like put the phone down and calm down but I'll tell you this like I I took a couple of videos that went completely viral I I had one really sweet video Diana terazzi came over right after the gold medal game to hug her parents and her dad you know her mom they they're just the whole family's crying and it was just this really beautiful moment her last Olympic game ever in her career and I posted that and it's got like a million views and I feel like it was an important moment to share with the world so I hear what you're saying and I do agree and think you're right honey but I also love it and I want to share it I know shared but you're I I don't want you to get defensive you keep saying your defense I'm not like attacking you where this is we're having a conversation I hear you it's back and forth about like what because you know even we start out the pot and I can hear your work Voice versus your talking voice you know and it's like like we start talking about sports and you're like and they and you get you get your beautiful you get your little and then yeah that 30 years 400 meter finals I know and it's like you know we're on a I know this podcast is public but also I think you know it's so is I what is that do you think is it just like is it it just like a habit at this point because you're just so ingrained in in the World of Sports I think maybe it's how my brain is wired honey like oh I saw this cool thing and I want to share it I just I mean it's been my life it's been my work yeah but my work is my life which I think is kind of a beautiful thing that I've been able to to turn into what I love so when I was a little girl I got obsessed with the Olympics because it was the only time I ever got to see women on TV competing so so flash back you know 20 30 years when I was little the some of the first and only women I ever got to watch on TV were Olympic athletes I remember like it was yesterday oga Corbett Nadia Konichi getting a perfect 10 like these were the most important moments of my life because I got to see women competing and it's what I wanted to do now of course I never got to be an Olympic gymnast but I can sure appreciate them and cry over them I would sit in my living room and just cry and watch these Sports so I don't know it's just kind of my heart honey it's like who I am as a person and again I again I just want to make it very clear this there's no attacking in this like an interesting conversation to have because you know it's it's this I I see the and it's less about like the loving Sports I totally get loving sports like you but it's there's there's that quality of like it's connected with the working part that's connected with it you know it's like I gotta post this I gotta I'm gonna I'm gonna put the voice on I'm gonna I'm gonna make it a I'm gonna make it a show and I'm I'm I'm interested in like is that is it is it just habit because I mean I'm I I always just assume it's Happ like when you were that's why I was giving you so much [ __ ] at the actual games it's because it was I was just like when you're at a game you're on the sidelines doing this already so like that makes sense that like you're at a game but but then but then no right I could just be there sitting there watching and and like enjoying it myself and not yeah documenting anything you don't know those like I mean I love I love doing the podcast and like this podcast is for Mass consum ion but also you know it's I I it's a conversation between us at the end of the day is the most important part right yeah know yeah I think it's all the things I can definitely just sit back and relax and enjoy a game and not have to tell anyone about it but then when something really cool is happening I just really do want to tell someone about it so let me give you an example so we're at the game we're at the gold medal game for Team USA we have really good seats we're on the second row right behind the bench for France well Midway through the first half wmi Victor wanyama the one of the most famous basketball players in the world right now sits down right in front of us Rudy gobear the whole French Men's National Team sits in front of us and I got this really cool video the moment that France France is giving USA this incredible game Gabby Williams Rises up and hits a shot that could possibly tie the game to go to overtime and Wy and Rudy goar and all the guys Nicholas Batum they're all sitting right in front of us and they rule it at two and so France has lost and I have this video of Wy like we call this the surrender cobra cobra in sports you know his hands are on his head like this Rudy go Bear's like this that is this really cool unbelievable moment that only I captured and I think that's cool there was a player on the French team that did not like me because they sat directly in front of us and I we were we were kind of squared off it it was all we were surrounded somehow by French people and so me and this other gentleman decided that we weren't going to be they might out cheer us but that doesn't mean we're not going to cheer and so we were going off and screaming and one of the guys was just like hey sit down and then and didn't didn't like one of the players we looked up his name do you remember his name I don't remember his name we looked up his name he was one of the players on the French national team you guys got into a little not a tip but like a star down of type right we had a little star down that you call which you calmed down very good but that's that's what I love about the Olympics is I was so I was just so proud to be American and it's not great but I was cheering and he was just like oh chill and I was like no I'm cheering bro this is that's my those are my girls I love that I love that you don't get to feel especially like nowadays everybody has their feelings on patriotism or whatever but just for like just a little bit just being like yeah where we're from us we America yeah like that's yeah one of the funny parts of that whole thing was um you know so we're sitting in a section where there's a lot of the players families sitting in for Team USA and so when the French national team came and sat in front of us they would stand up and it would block the entire family section so like at one point I looked down and Diana trass sister is like trying to tap wh and have him sit down so Diana taz's parents can see the game and so it was just all these funny little moments in these stories and so somebody's like how do I say sit down in French so I said like it's kind of a rud way to say sit down and so all the people around us are yelling I [ __ ] with to to wmy and and all the guys in front of us and some of them took exception to that so they didn't like it listen but was incredible hey we got we we love the team just it's passion it's passion passion yeah we I I love seeing you get into it and you know what was really fun for me too is so because I'm always working games with all these women in the WNBA I don't get a cheer for everybody you know like this is one of the first and only times I just get to be a fan and I'm like go Chelsea go like you gave me grief one time because I was like go call you're doing great out there and you're like like oh my gosh you're so obnoxious but I was cheering for all of these women like they're my own daughter like it was just beautiful we're cheering for Stewie and Asia and Chelsea and c and Kelsey and like we get to cheer and be the fans and it just felt so good I loved that part yeah that's that's the that's the real juice I mean we can all the big moments it's it's our experience our experience is what podcast is baby that's what we're talking about yeah I loved it I enjoyed traveling with you I don't think we annoyed each other as far as mother son annoyance goes I I half I'm half with that I do think sometimes you get a little bit into I wouldn't call it like a panic but a little bit just like well uh and I and then I get annoyed because I'm like well let's just make a decision and we kind of we go we go as ships in the night after like the the track and field that's going what happens yeah we're trying to get home kaken field and figure out the French train system at midnight and we're like I don't know we go here and I'm like I don't know if we go there yeah and I'm like let's just walk out of this area and get a taxi and it'll take 20 minutes you're like let's just take the train I was like the Train's gonna take 50 minutes and it's just like so I just didn't know where in Paris we were and what kind of neighborhood it was and I'm like I think it's better if we stay with all the fans like we're all here together instead of wandering out into the neighborhood and being like two fans by ourselves in the middle of a neighborhood in Paris that we don't know I mean we won't be that far into we'll be fine we have Google Maps like that's my I think that's my thing is I'm always just like we have our phones we have we know where things like directions it's you know a cab is always somewhere yeah I think another one of my things that I really enjoyed is we did you know we had a couple of days that we didn't have events where we did some sightseeing so I loved taking you to see sakur that's one of my favorite basilicas in the world and um the Jesus in there they have a mosaic of Jesus in there that is just L literally every time I walk into this church I kind of weep like this is so beautiful and it's a peaceful feeling and it was really beautiful and then we went to the Salvatore Dolly Museum which I always find very interesting I think he has a fascinating mind and his art and kind of Concepts were fascinating and then I did drag you to a few Emily and Paris sites um like hi this is where they filmed this scene in Emily Paris and um I didn't realize you'd never seen that show that show actually this is a good this is a good topic for us to talk about some stuff especially now just it's not for you we were I was watching episodes during the thing and I was like I won't ever watch this show not that it's bad it's just not my it's not not my brand I think it's so cute it's like the Parisian Sex in the City City the cute outfits good love stories love triangles beautiful people and it's shot in Paris um the other thing I would say is I just love Paris Jad per yeah did is beautiful it was very beautiful I went for the one day when you were in Helsinki I went for a bike ride kind of just through the city by myself and it was great it was fantastic I love it yeah wrote by The Arc Triumph and then the sham I I I'm at a cross RADS where I'm like do I just accept that I'm just going to slowly become more and more of just an ignorant American man who doesn't know stuff but it's very caring and it's like no like you know but just doesn't know how to like speak any other languages mostly uh I'm like do I do we just commit to that or do I try to learn a new one but I know I don't know like French is high on I feel like I'd go Spanish first probably I'll say this so I do speak French and the reason I speak French is the first time I ever went to France I absolutely hated the feeling of not being able to communicate with people and I have never felt like such an ignorant dumb person and and I won't just say this about Americans because I'm sure there's other cultures that only speak one language I do think Americans are very bad about this is because so many places speak English we just assume everyone will always speak English so after I went on that trip to France I think I was about 25 years old I came home and I said I will never feel like that again I will never feel like I cannot communicate with people again and so I started taking French classes and so I feel like my French isn't perfect but I got us around I could I could navigate everything I can talk to people the cab drivers love me there because they're all like oh my gosh your French is so good I felt like rockar in every cab that we took because they were all so impressed with my French um but I felt like a lot of people just appreciate even if you're not perfect that they appreciate that you're trying to learn a part of their culture and you're trying to meet them where they are so I would always say to you please try to learn a new language I did try to make you take classes when you were young and you just were not that interested in it um but and and there's no shame in that like whatever you want to do is fine but I do think it's really important for you to be able to communicate when you go places in the world so I would say French Spanish and English are your three musthaves um I H say that French is low no because I where I've used France uh French a lot is in Africa so like so many of the African nations have French as a primary or secondary language like you can almost communicate with anyone from Africa with French the um all the islands like French is a very very useful language I have found obviously Spanish would be too but um I don't know I think that's something that all of us if you're going to travel and be like a worldly person I think it's important to have some of that in your pocket so that you can communicate wherever you go yeah I mean and yeah with the onset of technology I feel like part of that like impetus has kind of gone away because you don't really need to because you can translate stuff on your phone um but yeah I hear what you're saying hear def hear that how has your jet lag been I'm hitting the wall now yeah I've been waking up at 3 o'clock every morning I literally got up and just started doing stuff because I laid in bed for a while and I couldn't function so I got up at 5 o'l in the morning and went for a walk watched the sunrise but then the only problem is like at 8:00 at night you're like I'm dying I have to go to sleep so I'm really struggling I'm working I'm back working games WNBA is back and I'm working and I'm struggling I am so like underwater how are you doing yeah I'm feel I'm feeling that now it's yeah I've been up since like 10: and I'm like Oh my body just doesn't I'm like I gotta pound a bunch of red bows or something it's it's interesting like the first day we were there I was falling asleep at one of the the games and I felt terrible because like I would be I was sitting upright with my shoulder like my arms crossed you know and I would just be I'd be watching and then time I would blink and I'd open my eyes again and time would have passed and I was like oh my God I like you forget how tired you can be and like not into your body just like shut it shut it off like put it put it to bed yeah shut it down this is this is it shut down well I would say that overall our prian are we comp Paris so number one we really didn't plan it a lot because it kind of came up late that we're gonna do this we we aren't planners we did not it's something we should probably work on as as humans um that yeah you're mean to yourself about it though I I will read verbatim a text that you sent me you got to be nicer to yourself that's hey you know what if we're going to have any Mental Health portion of the podcast be nice to yourself if you talk to yourself I it's Wentworth Miller said this he's on Prison Break which is a good issue it was good whatever um you if you would if you would talk to a friend the way you talk to yourself would they still be your friend which I think is very important one because if like if we were walking around I have said things to myself that I wouldn't repeat out loud like you lazy fat [ __ ] piece of [ __ ] and it's like you wouldn't and it's just like when you're having a bad day you're tired but I think they like finding a practice of just like you can still feel what you're feeling but the the way you talk about it and like like you were saying in that story where you're just like I never want to be a dumb ignorant it's like you were just a 25-year-old in a new country for the first time it's okay to not know a language learn a language that's good but you know talk to your talk nice to I think that's yeah I think the text you were talking about I sent you text I was like I'm so mad at us for procrastinating because we should have filmed this episode in Paris at some beautiful place instead I'm in a hotel room you're in your apartment but procrastinating so I was mad at us for procrastinating no the point of the the point of the PO is to call when we're not together anyways so you know what we didn't break form okay okay so you know what you know what listeners you're welcome for me fighting for the Integrity of what this podcast I just I just didn't want to do it I was like we were out we're on vacation we're you know like to take 30 minutes of our day for that I was like We'll we can do it when we're home Paris let's enjoy being in Paris yeah when you're somewhere where you can't do stuff that you can just do at home don't do that like Tiffany had a good point I mean I still went and saw a movie but when we went to LA um we were talking with some friends and like one want to go see a movie my friend Chandler he's great and I was like would you want to come to the movie and she was like no I don't want to go see a movie like why would we're on vacation why would we go see a movie which I mean obviously I'm different because I just love movies so I would I would go see a movie I like my first born was born and I would sit and watch a movie afterwards just let's just get let's get some of this in real quick I'm kidding okay but see that's my point that's how I feel about the sports honey like you love what you like no I get that I get that but so that's what I'm saying like um yeah I if we're on vacation sorry with podcast listeners I might want to just not do the podcast that day because I we can do it I can I can do some things it's okay to not necessarily procrastinate but do like because you know what I we went to sakore instead of doing the podcast and I can't really do that from my apart right good point touche touche to use a French word um before we get out of here I wanted to ask you so we did try a few things we had something really horrible to eat do what was the thing that you thought was the grossest thing we ate what am I what am I forgetting the welky the wel what was that oh the snail of the sea it was like a little escargo and it was this it really was just kind of like a snail but it was harder and grosser than a snail I think I spit mine out I'm grossing I'm grossing myself without even talking about so we tried a few new things we did the oysters we did the snail of the ocean called a welky or w l KS not a fan I probably won't ever have a welky again in my life and I don't I don't I don't need to anybody any welky fans you that want to come at us about not liking welkeys kick rocks it's okay we don't like what you like kick rocks kick rocks or eat them the bottom of the ocean that's what it tasted like bottom the other thing that you tried that I thought was a wind I thought you really liked was the steak hush I don't I don't know how to say it right h a c h e it was yeah it was basically a steak hash where they just put like an egg on top of yeah so that I was when we had that so it's basically they just keep like ground sirloin and then they put like an egg and like some peppers and stuff and I think onions in it or whatever and then serve it to you and it's like a breakfast thing and I was like this is genius because I always will do like a I'll I'll do a scramble and it just kind of it feels like you're eating prison mush it's just all one it's just a mush and I I was like I'm stealing this because they like they cooked a Patty pretty well which I usually don't love well done but they cook or make it into like a Patty is kind of deal and then put an OV easy egg on top of it and that was that was great anything else that you were like I never want to see this again or do this again or was there is there anything else that you were like this is my favorite thing I've ever done in my life uh the biking around Paris is cool I always I want to learn how to ride a motorcycle not for like day-to-day day-to-day use but just like because it would be fun to be able to like rent one and ride around a city that you don't know and kind of just explore um because then you know like on a bike it kind you can kind of get tired or whatever on the motorcycle you can kind of like see stuff and explore a little bit with a little bit more ease um or like a Vasa I guess would be easier you know need to learn it but I I was thinking that while we were there I was like you know I I want to learn how to ride kind of like two whe Vehicles not to like ride them or like race them or go crazy or anything but it's a nice thing to have where it's like we're going to we're going to Chicago and it's like oh you know what I'm gonna rent I'm gonna rent a motorcycle during the summer and like kind of just drive around Chicago and kind of like experience it and see it and like a close because you can be a little closer and it's not like you're in like a bus tour or anything you can kind of be like solid I I like I like that because you can kind of I like I like experiencing new things alone sometimes just so you can kind of feel it take in what you're experiencing and what you're seeing and ex yeah it was nice I think that was good to have like I know for future trips that we go on and I think I kind of do this anywhere anywhere we go because I my social batteries is a little different than yours is I'll kind of have like a little piece of like a little like a little like couple hours to myself at it's some point and kind of just like take things in and kind of just like feel it myself and Paris is great to do that and I did it I went for a couple runs too and it was I really lik that that was probably not my favorite because my favorite was obviously the stuff we did um and like the the gold to the gold medal game and like dinner afterwards dinner afterwards after the gold medal game what was the name of that place uh we went to a place called Sienna very we figured it was cool when Dwayne Wade and Gabrielle Union were in the restaurant oh if they're eating here this must be a good place but um by the end of the night let's just say we had the entire restaurant so you know in Paris they're kind of appropriate and the French are very stylish and you know they they have a sensibility about them that's very appropriate and have great etiquette um by the end of the night we had the entire restaurant singing waving their napkins uh singing disco hits at the top of their lungs the servers were dancing on the tables like um I'm just going to say we left it all in Paris shout out to the Sienna Restaurant in Paris that was epic we left it all on the court that's you know I'll leave with this one thing because we were kind of talking about this one thing I I will always stand by and I think it's kind of a little Modo modus sarandi for me if you will bring a little Latin in here um mode of operation is that I think that because people say like Americans are ridiculous well blah blah I'm like as long as I'm not inconveniencing or hurting anybody else I will happily and pridefully do whatever I would like as long as it's not if it's not a negative thing I think that that's a a because you know if you're always worried about what people are thinking about you and stuff it's bad but because I but I think if you're as long as you're not hurting other hurting or inconveniencing other people that's very important then I think like if because like like that part like what what we were doing we were bringing people in and everybody was having fun and yes we were being a little crazy but you know people were coming to us and like our joy was infectious and I think that's a it's always a you should never tamper down your joy so that you know for embarrassment or something is if you're not hurting anybody and you're not causing any kind of scene and you're just having a great time other people will want to come have a great time with you and don't don't worry about that out enjoy enjoy enjoy that inner that inner joy that you've made for yourself I think that's my on that big lesson I learned on that same note there was a funny moment so the restaurant starts like doing their um napkins the whole restaurant like boom B yeah yeah oh yeah and at one point you may have you may have just breezed a woman sitting at a table next to us maybe not hit her in the face think little close got a little close I catch her eye and I go to apologize to the woman that's sitting next to me that's her tablemate and she going yeah yeah yeah with her napkin and they're totally into it I'm like oh I think we're okay I think we're okay because they are dancing and having just the same amount of fun that we are exactly we we your our Joys our when you're living we have the foundation when you're being joyful and joyous brings people in and you shouldn't tamper your joy because you're worried somebody might think you're being a little loud or being a little rude if you're being loud and rude shut the shut shut up don't do that but if you're be aware
